What is sustainable fishing and sustainable seafood?
Sustainable fishing is the opposite of overfishing. Instead of taking too much seafood from the oceans, sustainable fishing is when fishers take enough seafood so that people aren't starving, but not so much that there isn't going to be enough seafood in the future. We are trying to preserve the seafood, so that there would be enough seafood for future generations.
Sustainable seafood is seafood that has been fished or farmed in ways that have less impact on the environment.
OVER FISHING IS A BIG DEAL. The world's ocean ecosystem might collapse in 2048. It might sound far, far away, but truly, years pass in the blink of an eye. If the fisheries truly do collapse, this would be a BIG problem for the whole food chain and ecosystem - including us! Seafood is the main protein for 1.2 billion people around the world. That's huge! Seafood is important to the world, so therefore, fisheries should have the freedom to fish. The catch is, fish cannot reproduce as fast as the fisheries catch. So what's the solution? What are we going to do? You can help by following the seafood guide below. You can also download the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch app. Learn more at http://www.seafoodwatch.org/ |
