Factory Farms and the Animals Living There
(a project from 6th grade G/T research)

Animals that we eat are often bred and raised on Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFO).  Large numbers of animals live in crowded, and unclean, conditions.  Animals at CAFOs may be treated very harshly. They live in small cages and often stand in their own waste. Because they live so close together, if one animal gets sick, they all do. Thus, these animals are more likely to be treated with antibiotics, which leads to antibiotic resistance in humans.  It is important to understand what animal labels mean, and how they can impact humans and animals.
